Royal Hobart Regatta

Lieutenant Daniel McMillan may be executive officer of HMAS Diamantina now, but his career started in 1991 when he joined the Navy from his hometown of Hobart as a marine technician.

He left the Navy in 2004, but the adventure of seeing the world and protecting his country still called to Lieutenant McMillan, inspiring him to re-join in 2016 as a maritime warfare officer.

He worked his way up the ranks to become a principal warfare officer specialising in mine warfare.

Coming back to Hobart has been a highlight for Lieutenant McMillan, especially as he was able to show his family his workplace.

“Last time I was in Tasmania on a ship was HMAS Hobart (II) in 1996 for the Hobart Regatta,” Lieutenant McMillan said.

“It’s one of the best moments I’ve had in Navy, sailing into my home port back in 1996, and again on Diamantina.”

When talking about his favourite parts of being in the Navy, Lieutenant McMillan said joining Navy provided a workplace where you get to travel around the world and build friendships with different people.

The most rewarding part of Lieutenant McMillan’s job, during his long career, was working as the executive officer of a ship.

“As an officer it is my privilege to work for our sailors in developing them into the people they can be by positive leadership and mentoring,” he said.

“My advice to anyone would be to focus on what you want in life, strive for the stars and enjoy all aspects of life, including work. They are memories for a lifetime.”

HMAS Diamantina was the flagship to the 186th iteration of the Royal Hobart Regatta, held from February 10 to 12.
