East Gippsland Shire Council has started drainage improvement works within the Bairnsdale Aerodrome, with an expected completion date of late October.
Works will include a new drainage system and construction of a retarding basin, replacing infrastructure dating back to World War II.
Council’s General Manager Assets and Environment Fiona Weigall said all user groups were notified of the works schedule, and a method of works plan submitted to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
“Advanced notification of any proposed works has been provided to limit disruption to services and to ensure safety of any personnel and aircraft operating from the aerodrome. Disruption to air traffic will be kept to a minimum,” Ms Weigall said.
The Bairnsdale Aerodrome accommodates aerial firefighting, corporate charter flights, aircraft support services such as fleet maintenance, air ambulance and courier services.
“Given the aerodrome is also used as the airbase for Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning firefighting operations, we have purposely timed the works to avoid bushfire season,” Ms Weigall said.
In conjunction with the Aerodrome Master Plan, the current works being undertaken onsite will ensure the facility continues to develop into a regional hub for aircraft servicing the East Gippsland community.
As part of council’s annual capital works program, the $490,000 project is being completed by local contractor Frith’s Plumbing.
