Behind lens with Griffith film grad

Griffith film alumnus and cinematographer Shing Fung Cheung is part of an all-star panel that will take movie buffs behind the lens.

Shing Fung will be joined by award-winning cinematographers Nino Martinetti and Tony O’Loughlan for a Q&A on the art of shooting features, documentaries, commercials and music videos.

Shing Fung completed a film degree at Griffith University before undertaking postgraduate studies at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS). His graduating short film “Danya”, earned him first prize in the Kodak Film School World Competition was showcased at the Cannes Film Festival.

He has worked in the industry for more than 20 years, making a name for himself as Director of Photography (DOP) on feature films, music videos and commercials.

Shing Fung said he was keen to pass on his knowledge of the industry to the next generation of filmmakers.

“As well as all of the technical skills, it’s about passing on that knowledge about building professional networks and getting work in the industry,” he said.

“In the film industry, it’s not just about the craft, it’s about the hustle.”

Shing Fung credits his studies at Griffith with providing a solid foundation for his career in the screen industry.

“We were lucky at film school – we had access to a lot of gear, and were encouraged to shoot as much as we could,” he said.

“It is so important to learn to work with a crew, and I learned a lot from from my peers.”
