Bayside is making it safer and easier to walk, ride and travel around the municipality, with new pedestrian crossings, improved shared paths, electric vehicle chargers and safer school connections delivered over the past year.
The improvements are part of Council’s Integrated Transport Strategy, which is helping create a more connected, accessible and sustainable transport network for people of all ages and abilities.
Safer everyday journeys
Key improvements in 2025-26 include eight raised pedestrian crossings at two Brighton intersections and a new crossing near Hampton East School and Basterfield Park.
These upgrades give pedestrians priority over vehicles, encourage slower speeds and support safer everyday trips for students, families and pedestrians.
Other works have improved accessible parking, added public electric vehicle charging, boosted safety along the Bay Trail and reduced the speed limit on several streets surrounding the new raised pedestrian crossings in Brighton.
The upgrades are already supporting better travel choices, with community satisfaction for transport infrastructure increasing from 7.1 to 7.2 in the 2026 Customer Satisfaction Survey. Walking safety on residential streets was rated excellent, while cycling safety on residential streets and parking availability also received positive results.
More improvements on the way
More improvements are on the way in 2026-27, including new raised crossings in Cheltenham, Brighton and near Sandringham Primary School, speed limit reductions at several locations and further upgrades to sections of the Bay Trail at Black Rock.
Council will also continue work on accessible parking, public electric vehicle charging, safer school travel and better access to public transport, making it easier for the community to choose walking, cycling and low-emissions travel.
Alongside local works, Council is advocating for more frequent bus services, safer crossings on arterial roads and strong walking and cycling connections through major state projects.
Together, these actions are building a transport network that is safer, more sustainable and easier to use now and into the future.
Council received the latest Integrated Transport Strategy Implementation Update at its September meeting, highlighting a strong year of practical upgrades across Bayside. Improving transport across our municipality is a key action of the Council Plan 2025-2029.
