Bold Housing Plans Welcome, Caution Needed on Kowen Forest

Property Council ACT & Capital Region Executive Director Ashlee Berry said the pledge aligns with the Property Council’s recent report with Purdon reinforcing the urgent need for bold, decisive action to tackle Canberra’s housing crisis.

“It’s clear all major parties are putting the housing crisis front of mind, and the commitment to separate titles on larger blocks mirrors the recommendations we’ve championed,” Ms Berry said.

“The promise to accelerate the release of land and streamline the planning process is another positive. More certainty in the planning system is vital for our members and for everyone in the broader community.

“We need a clear, predictable pipeline of land release for a variety of housing types – from standalone homes to townhouses and duplexes – to offer all Canberrans a real choice of housing at different life stages, something critical to alleviating supply issues,” she said.

Ms Berry said efforts to boost housing supply were welcome, but the proposed development of Kowen Forest needed further examination.

“Bulldozing Kowen Forest could raise concerns for many in the community. It’s crucial that any decision about the site involves a full exploration of its long-term impacts,” Ms Berry said.

“Community consultation and a comprehensive feasibility study would be essential to balance housing needs with environmental and recreational values,” she said.

The Property Council will continue to work closely with all political parties to ensure Canberra’s housing needs are met through responsible, sustainable development that preserves the character of the city.
