Boosting oversight funding to deliver stronger Triple-Zero

Victoria’s emergency management oversight agency will receive the funding it needs to do its job properly under a Matt Guy Liberals and Nationals Government.

The Inspector-General for Emergency Management (IGEM) is an independent agency responsible for the oversight of emergency services such as Triple-Zero, CFA, SES and more and provides advice on their continuous improvement.

A recent IGEM report linked 33 deaths to failings within Victoria’s Triple-Zero call taking services.

This report exposed the tragic consequences of years of mismanagement of Triple-Zero by the Andrews Labor Government and highlighted the importance of IGEM’s role as an oversight agency.

Despite the importance of IGEM in delivering better emergency services for Victorians, the agency has stated it has not been fully funded since its creation in 2014.

Therefore, a Matt Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will fully fund IGEM by providing an additional $6.2 million over four years.

This commitment is in addition to the Liberals and Nationals’ $125 million plan to fix Triple-Zero, including by upgrading IT and dispatch systems as well as facilitating multiple service training for 50 per cent of all call taking and dispatch staff.

Shadow Minister for Emergency Services, Brad Battin, said fully funding IGEM was a real solution to restore community confidence in Triple-Zero.

“Whether its IGEM, IBAC or the Ombudsman – Daniel Andrews has a record of withholding funding to oversight agencies who expose the failings of his government.”

“A properly funded IGEM means a stronger and more transparent Triple-Zero that supports Victorians in need.”

“Only the Liberals and Nationals have real solutions to fix Triple-Zero and restore community confidence in this vital service.”
