Boroondara Arts Encouragement Award presented at Camberwell Art Show

The Camberwell Art Show is one of Australia’s leading selected entry art shows featuring many of Australia’s top artists. The City of Boroondara has supported the Camberwell Art Show since its inception and offers the Boroondara Arts Encouragement Award to exhibiting artists who are residents or have a studio in Boroondara.

Recognising excellence in contemporary visual art, the Boroondara Arts Encouragement Award celebrates and promotes local artists by providing a unique opportunity to exhibit works in the foyer of the Hawthorn Arts Centre. This non-acquisitive award is judged by the Camberwell Art Show judging panel and the Town Hall Gallery curatorial team.

This year the judges were pleased to present the Boroondara Arts Encouragement Award to local artist Caroline Calway for her piece ‘Along the Gibb’. Their comments on the award-winning painting were:

“This piece captures a wonderful sense of light and quiet movement highlighting the landscape’s tranquillity. There are moments of both realism and abstraction that lend to the overall impression of the scene. The judges were intrigued by the vivid use of colour and abstracted, gestural composition, and were thrilled to see this contemporary and fresh approach to landscape painting.”

The 2021 Boroondara Arts Encouragement Award winner was Eileen van Bavel. ‘Canvas and Paint’ by Eileen Van Bavel is on display at Hawthorn Arts Centre from 28 June to 6 August 2022.
