Build Up Tassie

Nic Street, Minister for Housing and Construction

The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to creating training and employment opportunities that will help deliver new homes.

The first Action Plan under our 20-year, Tasmanian Housing Strategy has committed to supporting training opportunities in the building sector.

Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street, said that training the next generation of Tasmania’s home builders is incredibly important.

“We know that supply is critical, and our government is investing in a strong skilled workforce to ensure we deliver,” Minister Street said.

“Build Up Tassie, run by Centacare Evolve Housing, is a strong example of a pathway for young Tasmanians from all walks of life to get employment ready.

“In Bridgewater a 12-unit Centacare Evolve Housing development is giving Build Up Tassie apprentices the chance to learn new skills while delivering new homes to those in need.

“This development, funded with $1.16 million through Homes Tasmania’s Community Housing Grant Program, includes eight units to be available for social and affordable housing and four units which will be available for private sale.

“Build Up Tassie provides six-months, pre-employment support and training which includes work experience in various trades with partnering social enterprise, St Joseph’s Affordable Homes.

“The program is delivering great results with 38 apprentices working across nine different trades in the State’s South within St Joseph’s Affordable Homes.

“A further intake of up to eight young people is scheduled for January.

“To date, there have been 41 participants of the Build Up Tassie orientation program since 1 January 2023, with 20 of these being supported into employment.

“St Joseph’s Affordable Homes currently has 204 homes under construction across Tasmania.”

Build Up Tassie offers participants the opportunity to move to an apprenticeship with St Joseph’s Affordable Homes where they are provided with wrap around support to ensure they have the skills they need to succeed into the future.

The program also provides wellbeing support to individuals throughout the pre-employment program and into their apprenticeships/traineeships with St Joseph Affordable Homes.

This support includes access to a counsellor, psychologist, case management support, referrals to specialised services and generalised holistic support.

The program has provided 54 individual driving lessons and 348 coaching sessions to provide holistic one-on-one tailored supports since the start of the year.

Minister Street said that the Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering on its long-term plan to do what matters for all Tasmanians by supporting more Tasmanians into their own homes, while keeping our economy strong and creating more jobs.
