  • The building assessment program will help forecast future work requirements
  • The program is one of the biggest ever undertaken in Western Australia
  • One of Western Australia’s biggest building assessment programs has begun with thousands of social housing properties to undergo review.

The $12.8 million Building Condition Assessment program will assess around 10,000 of the State’s oldest social housing properties to help identify property maintenance requirements.

The information gathered during the assessment program will help forecast future required works to keep housing stock viable and in the system.

The program was part of the record $875 million investment in social housing in the McGowan Government’s 2021 State Budget.

The program will begin with an initial 240 properties in metropolitan Perth, with a further 4,000 properties expected to reviewed by the middle of 2023. The entire program will be rolled out over the coming four years.

The assessment program is one of a number of initiatives being delivered by the McGowan Government to improve the State’s stock of social housing.

During this term of Parliament, the McGowan Government will invest $2.1 billion in social housing, which will include the delivery of around 3,300 new social housing properties.

As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:

“The McGowan Government is investing significantly to expand Western Australia’s stock of social housing, but it’s critical we also look after the housing we have.

“This $12.8 million building assessment program will ensure we are in the best possible position to maintain our existing stock, and limit the amount of homes we lose from the system, by extending their useful life.

“This building assessment program is one of a number of initiatives being delivered by our Government, and will provide us with critical information that will help us future-proof our stock of social housing.

“In this term of Parliament, the McGowan Government will be investing $2.1 billion to expand and improve our stock of social housing, including the delivery of 3,300 new homes.”
