Bulcock Street set to shine with new bespoke lighting feature

A region-first light installation will soon brighten up Caloundra, making it the final component of the Stage 3 Bulcock Street streetscape upgrade.

The major design features a bespoke 60 lineal metre canopy of LED lights that will weave across and along Bulcock Street; aiming to enhance the look and overall experience of the area.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 2 councillor Tim Dwyer is excited to see the dynamic installation create a modern and vivid focal point for the community.

“The vibrant canopy is created with nine custom made light poles with timber inserts called ‘ibeams’ which will support an overhead web of cables, known as a ‘catenary’,” Cr Tim Dwyer said.

“It’s a shining example of smart technology incorporating sophisticated design and engineering – creating an illuminated ‘ceiling’ above the street, that with permitted closure for events, can form an atmospheric, outdoor-room for night markets, parades and a wide range of community celebrations.”

The feature will incorporate 1500 LED downlights and 21 decorative cylindrical lanterns which will be programmed with over 20 sequences and effects, with room for more to be added in the future. The ‘catenary’ has also been designed to include event banners, art installations and Christmas decorations.

Sunshine Coast Council is pleased the upgrade completion will shape the street’s character and provide a welcoming experience for residents and visitors, while building on a sustainable economy for Caloundra.

“This specially designed lighting feature has been some time in the planning, and I’m delighted that it will soon become part of the Bulcock Street streetscape with installation works starting in April,” Cr Dwyer said.

“It will not only beautify the street, but support our local businesses by bringing more people into downtown Caloundra during the evening and make the area even safer.”

Downtown Caloundra Taskforce member Vicki Taylor echoed Cr Dwyer’s support and said the lighting will provide a fresh and exciting element to Bulcock Street.

“This lighting feature is another exciting milestone in Downtown Caloundra’s history, particularly as it will help to further support those businesses which trade at night,” Vicki Taylor said.

“The lights will add another dimension to the many events held in Caloundra throughout the year.”

Works will begin on the decorative lighting installation after the Easter School holiday period with a combination of night and day works, starting on April 20 and estimated to be complete by June 30.
