Burnie Court must stay in CBD location

Tasmanian Labor

Labor has launched a petition calling on the State Government to abandon its plan to relocate the Burnie Court and instead commit to keeping it in the CBD.

Labor Member for Braddon Anita Dow said the planned relocation fails to take into account the Burnie business community, local residents, the Council and the legal profession.

“It’s now been three years since the Liberals promised $15 million to fund a new Burnie Court, committing to redevelop the current site in the CBD,” Ms Dow said.

“But, not only has there been little to no progress in that time, the government has also abandoned its commitment and is planning to relocate the court to a residential area, while the cost of the project has blown out to $40 million.

“To make matters worse, there has been no community consultation, despite considerable concerns raised by the business community, local residents, Council and the legal professionals in the city.

“The current court building is not fit for purpose and a new court is desperately needed but it makes no sense to move the complex outside the Burnie CBD.

“Labor’s petition calls for the government to immediately halt the relocation to Mooreville Road and commit to redeveloping the court on the current site or find a new location within the Burnie CBD.

“Crucially the Liberal government and Minister Elise Archer need to start listening to locals and ensure that they engage with the very people their plans will affect.

“It’s time the Liberals did the right thing by the Burnie Community and upheld their commitment to redevelop the Burnie Court in the CBD.”
