Bushfire smoke health alert

NSW Health is reminding people to takeprecautions as smoke from the severe bushfires is expected to cause poor airquality in Sydney and the Hunter this afternoon.

NSW Health Director of Environmental HealthDr Richard Broome reminds people to take precautions as smoke can irritate therespiratory system and aggravate existing lung and heart conditions.

“Smoke from fires on the Mid-North Coast isbeing blown south and we’re expecting poor air quality this afternoon,” said DrBroome.

“Smoke contains fine particles that canaffect people’s health,” said Dr Broome.

“For most people, smoke causes mild symptomslike sore eyes, nose and throat. However, people with existing lung and heartconditions like asthma, emphysema and angina are more likely to be sensitive tothe effects of smoke.

“People with these conditions should avoidoutdoor physical activity when there’s smoke around.

“People with asthma should also follow theirAsthma Action Plan and have their relieving medication with them.”

“The best way to reduce exposure to smoke isto stay indoors with the doors and windows shut. Air conditioning can also helpto filter particles from indoor air,” Dr Broome said.
