Business Employment Data: June 2024 Quarter

Business employment data includes filled jobs and gross earnings, with breakdowns by industry, sex, age, region, and territorial authority area, using a combination of data from two different Inland Revenue sources: the employer monthly schedule (EMS) and payday filing. Both are associated with PAYE (pay as you earn) tax data.

Total actual filled jobs in the June 2024 quarter were 2.3 million.

In the June 2024 quarter (compared with the March 2024 quarter):

  • total seasonally adjusted filled jobs − down 0.4 percent (8,789 jobs).

For the year ended June 2024 compared with the year ended June 2023:

  • total gross earnings – up 7.6 percent ($12.5 billion).

We use an annual comparison for earnings to account for payroll timing differences between quarters.

Filled jobs changes by industry

At an industry level, the largest changes in seasonally adjusted filled jobs in the June 2024 quarter compared with the March 2024 quarter were in:

  • health care and social assistance – up 1.4 percent (3,843 jobs)
  • administrative and support services – down 2.9 percent (2,958 jobs)
  • construction – down 1.2 percent (2,241 jobs)
  • accommodation and food services – down 1.1 percent (1,761 jobs).

Filled jobs changes by region

At a regional level, the largest changes in seasonally adjusted filled jobs compared with the March 2024 quarter were in:

  • Auckland – down 0.7 percent (5,248 jobs)
  • Waikato – down 0.3 percent (577 jobs)
  • Hawke’s Bay – down 0.7 percent (542 jobs)
  • Bay of Plenty – down 0.4 percent (539 jobs)
  • Taranaki – down 1.0 percent (517 jobs).

Filled jobs changes for men and women

In actual terms, from the June 2023 quarter to the June 2024 quarter, the number of filled jobs rose by 0.4 percent (4,333 jobs) for men and rose by 0.4 percent (4,911) jobs for women.

Earnings by industry

In actual terms and at an industry level, the largest increases in total annual gross earnings for the year ended June 2024, compared with the year ended June 2023, were in:

  • health care and social assistance – up 17 percent ($3.3 billion)
  • public administration and safety – up 10 percent ($1.5 billion)
  • education and training – up 11 percent ($1.4 billion).

Revision to June 2023 quarter data

This quarterly release includes corrections in the data files to the region coding of filled jobs and territorial authority in June 2023 quarter. These jobs belong to employees living in Rolleston, Christchurch. In previously released data, they were incorrectly coded to the Westland territorial authority in the West Coast regional council area. They are now correctly assigned to the Selwyn territorial authority which is in the Canterbury regional council area.
