Have you ever wanted to unleash your creativity on a traffic signal box? Now is your chance to get involved and design and paint an original art design on a traffic signal box!
We’ve a number of traffic signal boxes across the city that have had a colourful glow-up, as part of a strategy to reduce graffiti and vandalism in public spaces. We’re calling for community members to put their hands up to design and paint one of the rectangular, metal boxes. We’ll provide the painting supplies, and the best part is – you don’t have to be a professional artist to apply.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that Council was looking for keen individuals, community groups, schools, and artists to submit an idea and get creative.
“Traffic signal boxes are those boxes located at intersections of roads that have traffic lights. and inside these boxes are the traffic lights’ electronics,” Cr Bradbery said.
“We want to beautify our city and offer community members a fun way to be creative and participate in public art. Painting traffic signal boxes is always a hugely popular activity and we’re sure that we’ll receive lots of interesting, creative ideas.
“If you’ve always wanted to paint on a traffic signal box and showcase your art to the rest of your community, now is the chance. Submit an idea and a sketch of your proposed artwork by Sunday 15 May to be considered for this project.”
People of all ages, backgrounds and artistic ability are invited to express interest in designing and painting artwork on a traffic signal box.
“There are a few simple rules and processes that will need to be followed to keep participants safe, as you will be painting near roads and traffic,” Cr Bradbery said.
“Council will supply the successful applicants with all the materials they will need to complete the project. We’ll also pay a small fee for your efforts to paint the box.”
Expressions of interest close Sunday 15 May 2022. All painting of boxes must occur between 23 May and 19 June 2022.
