Cannabis seized in Katherine

Northern Territory Police have seized a quantity of cannabis which was destined for an alcohol protected area.

Around 1:00pm yesterday, police conducted a random liquor search of a bus which was bound for Numbulwar Community.

Drug Detector Dog Astra was deployed and provided a conditioned response to multiple bags on the bus and to one passenger.

The 40-year-old female passenger was detected with 168 grams of cannabis on her person.

Further packages of cannabis was found in passenger luggage, totalling 331 grams.

Two bottles of 700ml spirits were also located.

The 40-year-old woman was issued a noticed to appear in Numbulwar Local Court on Wednesday 18 November 2020 for:

  • possess schedule 2 dangerous drug – traffickable quantity – public place
  • supply schedule 2 dangerous drug – Indigenous community.

Four persons were issued with drug infringement notices and two people were issued with liquor infringement notices.

Possession of a traffickable quantity of cannabis in a public place has a maximum penalty of up to 7 years imprisonment. Supply of cannabis to an Indigenous community has a maximum penalty of 9 years imprisonment.

Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Malley said, “Police will continue to prevent drugs from entering our communities. There are far reaching consequences for the communities if harmful substances are present. To those thinking about taking drugs into our communities, think twice. We will stop you and won’t hesitate to issue you with infringement notices or court dates in court.”
