A calming influence and a listening ear delivering support to those in need, chaplains play an important role in the lives of many people every day.
As chaplain at the Carinity Brownesholme aged care community in Highfields, Tim Smith supports seniors who may be experiencing a difficult time in their lives.
Tim became chaplain at Carinity Brownesholme last year, after serving in a similar role at Carinity Karinya Place aged care in Laidley for two years.
He has extensive experience serving as a chaplain in both aged care and hospital settings, in the Fraser Coast and Toowoomba regions, but has always gravitated towards supporting older people.
“The difference between hospital chaplaincy and aged care chaplaincy is you can build a greater rapport with the aged care residents, get to know them, and join them on their journey,” Tim said.
“It’s a real pleasure to visit and chat with the residents, and to assure them that they are still valued, listened to, and important.”
Tim’s role entails a variety of pastoral care including devotions, praying with groups and individuals, and leading church services. He also spends time with residents’ families.
“I love running chapel services. Standing at the front of the room and seeing the residents all singing hymns together, it’s lovely to witness the spiritual side of these people coming together in worship,” Tim said.
Carinity has chaplains who support people in hospitals, schools, correctional centres and aged care communities across the state.
Contributions to the Carinity Chaplains Appeal will help ensure chaplains like Tim can continue their vital work in the community.
