Award winning writer, blogger, speaker, appearance activist, aspiring chef, music lover and fashionista Carly Findlay is coming to Hobsons Bay.
In an author talk not to be missed, Carly will be discussing her new book, Say Hello to Carly Findlay, at Altona Library.
Carly, a western suburbs resident, is best-known for her activism around appearance and her work in raising awareness about ichthyosis, a group of genetic skin diseases that cause dry, scaly, thickened skin.
Prior to establishing herself as an authority on visibly different appearances, Carly struggled with her own identity and often felt hurt by the comments made by others. She has since become a force to be reckoned with and a vocal campaigner and educator on the rights of people with a disability.
Earlier this year Carly published her memoir, ‘Say Hello to Carly Findlay’. The book is rich with stories about Carly’s life as well as thoughts and observations on ableism, media representation and beauty privilege. There’s advice to readers with and without ichthyosis, facial difference and disability and a prevalent theme of hope and disability pride. Carly’s story opens the door to more people with ichthyosis telling their story and increasing diverse representation.
The title of the book is particularly poignant. Carly asks her readers to say hello rather than ignoring her, looking shocked or scared, or making a rude comment about her face. Leading by example, Carly shows readers how to be proud of their identity and their appearance, and love themselves even when the world has told them they have to hide.
About Ichtyosis
Ichthyosis is not one disease, but a family of about 20 skin conditions that lead to dry skin. People with this condition lose the protective barrier that keeps moisture in their skin. They also make new skin cells too quickly or shed old cells too slowly. This leads to a build-up of thick, scaly skin.
