Catering for diversity during Harmony Week

Nic Street,Minister for Community Services and Development

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is securing Tasmania’s future as a State where all Tasmanians can celebrate diversity, inclusion, and respect.

Harmony Week celebrates our multicultural diversity, and food gives Tasmanians the opportunity for us all to celebrate the contribution of multiculturalism to our social, cultural and economic wellbeing.

Nothing brings people together quite like food, and it was fantastic to join MRC Tasmania for the opening of its Takeaway and Delivery Service MRC Catering, today.

Initially set up in May 2019 as a new social enterprise funded by the Department of State Growth, MRC Catering gives participants with the opportunity to celebrate and share their cultural background while also providing practical kitchen skills and workplace experience to multicultural Tasmanians seeking work in hospitality.

The initiative provides a pathway to employment for people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, and gives back to the State socially and economically, by bringing communities together through food.

Our shared values of respect, equality and freedom go beyond our different cultures, and are what makes Tasmania such a great place to live, and I encourage all Tasmanians to celebrate cultural diversity this week and always.

Currently available as take away and delivery, the MRC Catering service will run on Thursdays and Fridays, with delivery to Hobart and surrounding suburbs.
