Celebrating Women in Policing, Constable Sharon Xu reflects on International Women’s Day

In honour of the leaps and bounds made towards equality, this International Women’s Day is anchored by the theme of Inspire Inclusion, which promotes a world of diversity, equitability and inclusivity.

On this day, March 8, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) acknowledges the incredible women in policing who support their community and embody these traits, not only today but everyday beyond.

Constable Sharon Xu of the QPS, knew from childhood she wanted to join the world of policing, driven by her passion for helping those in need and her qualities of resilience and perseverance.

“I have always wanted to be a police officer, ever since I was a child, I liked reading crime books and always dreamed about actually becoming an officer day” she said.

“Policing is a very rewarding job to me, knowing that I can make a difference for others. I hope I can inspire other women out there to be whoever they want to be, do whatever job they want to do, whether or not that be policing.

“People are always shocked to know that I am a Police Officer, as it is very rare for a woman to be a first line police officer back in my country in China, but I am super proud to be one.”

For Constable Xu, International Women’s Day symbolizes solidarity and empowerment. It’s a day to celebrate progress towards gender equality while acknowledging the challenges women still face.

“I am proud to be a woman and through steps towards gender equality, women have more opportunities than ever before. We can be whoever we want to be.

“I do think being a woman also means lots of challenges, but days such as today, it is important that we celebrate being women and we cheer for other women.”

As a female police officer, Constable Xu embraces her role with pride, recognizing both the opportunities and obstacles it entails, but she sees it as an opportunity to inspire and help others.

“Knowing that I helped someone and made a difference is an absolutely highlight to me, words cannot describe that feeling,” she said.
