State fire authorities have been recognised for their admirable bravery and commitment in fighting the devastating bushfires gripping New South Wales and Queensland, at the Pride of Australia Awards in Sydney earlier this week

Country Fire Authority (CFA) South West Regional Commander Peter Creak attended event, hosted by News Corp Australia and Australia Post, on Wednesday, 11 December to accept the National Pride of Australia medallion on behalf of the CFA.

The event celebrated the heroism and courage of the nation’s firefighters and their continuous work in protecting Australian communities and saving lives. CFA was recognised and awarded alongside its partner emergency service agencies across the country, including:

  • NSW Fire and Rescue
  • NSW Office of Emergency Management
  • NSW Rural Fire Service
  • NSW State Emergency Service
  • QLD Fire and Emergency Services
  • South Australia Country Fire Service

Mr Creak said it was an honour to accept the award on behalf of the brave CFA staff and volunteer members that protect

“The CFA is a great organisation, it’s community-based, well-connected at a local level and we have the capacity to send over 2000 people interstate to support fire efforts further afield. I’m proud to be a part of it,” he said.

“It’s important to recognise, acknowledge and celebrate CFA volunteers and staff who have travelled interstate and also recognise CFA members protecting communities closer to home.

“We are in for a difficult fire season, particularly in East Victoria with the fires currently burning there. We appreciate the work and efforts of our members that work locally in their own communities.”

News Corp Australia has pledged $50,000 to assist communities in bushfire affected areas, with $25,000 of that figure to be donated to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund and the other $25,000 committed to the Salvation Army Emergency Services.

“It was a wonderful to watch individuals from across the country being recognised for doing some extraordinary things and for fire services to be part of that was really special,” Mr Creak said.
