Charges laid after alleged stolen firearm seized – Wetherill Park RES

A man will face court today charged after an allegedly stolen firearm was seized from a home in Sydney’s west.

In October 2021, officers from South West Metropolitan Region established Strike Force Hawk to target and disrupt organised criminal networks operating in Sydney.

As part of their inquiries, investigators from Wetherill Park Region Enforcement Squad executed a Firearms Prohibition Order at a home in Westmead about 7am today (Monday 26 June 2023).

During a search of the home, investigators located a loaded .22 bolt action shortened rifle, ammunition, a military vest, and cannabis. These items were seized to undergo forensic examination.

A 27-year-old man was arrested at the property and was taken to Granville Police Station.

He was charged with possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority, acquire prohibited firearm-subject prohibition order, possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority, acquire ammunition subject to prohibition order, and possess prohibited drug.

Police will allege in court that the shortened rifle had been stolen from a home in Girraween in 2014.

The man was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court today.
