Charges – Stolen Motor Vehicle and Pursuit – Alice Springs

The Northern Territory Police Force has arrested four adult males in relation to a stolen motor vehicle and subsequent police pursuit that occurred in Alice Springs yesterday.

At 10:20pm on Wednesday, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received a report that a white Kia was driving erratically in Ntaria. The vehicle was confirmed as having been allegedly stolen from an address in The Gap in Alice Springs.

At 11:25am on Thursday, the Kia was sighted by police members in the vicinity of Palm Valley Access Road. Upon sighting police, the vehicle allegedly began travelling at speed in the direction of Alice Springs.

A short time later, it was sighted travelling on Larapinta Drive near Flynn’s Grave. A traffic apprehension was attempted, however the vehicle failed to stop. Tyre deflation devices were deployed, and a pursuit was initiated when the vehicle again failed to stop.

The pursuit was subsequently terminated for safety concerns. A short time later it was observed colliding into the rear of a civilian vehicle at low speed, with no injuries or damage being reported. The Kia continued driving dangerously in Braitling before another tyre deflation device was deployed resulting in the vehicle coming to a stop on Brown Street, Ciccone.

Four males aged 18, 18, 19 and 20 fled from the vehicle and were arrested nearby.

The passengers were charged with driving, riding or using a motor vehicle without consent, and the alleged driver was charged with:

  • Drive, ride, use motor vehicle without consent
  • Drive dangerous manner – pursuit
  • Driver with prohibited drug in body
  • Not stopping after crash
  • Drive unlicenced
  • Possess schedule 2 drug – Less than trafficable quantity

All four were remanded to appear in court today.
