Australia’s peak marine NGO is urging Aussies who love delicious seafood to pick sustainable options for the dinner table this holiday season.
Earlier this year, the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) released a revamped version of Australia’s most trusted sustainable seafood guide, now called GoodFish, which helps home cooks and chefs make the best selections to ensure our oceans remain healthy.
Using a traffic lights system and based on the latest scientific data, the fully independent guide informs users on any threats to protected species or fish stocks, and provides details on how the seafood is farmed or fished.
The Guide was created in response to demands from the public who wanted to know which seafood picks are the best for our oceans and its wildlife and helps reward fishers and producers whose operations are helping to ensure there will be seafood available in the future.
AMCS’s GoodFish Program Manager Sascha Rust said: “Whether it’s oysters, mussels, marron, barra or snapper that you love, a platter of seafood is an iconic Australian Christmas feast to serve your family and friends.
“We would urge shoppers to visit the website or download our GoodFish app to guide them to make sustainable choices in markets and supermarkets so they can be safe in the knowledge their feasts are ocean friendly as well as delicious.
“By making wise seafood choices this Christmas, we can ensure the fishers and producers who help to ensure there will be seafood available in the future are rewarded, further encouraging their stewardship of our oceans and its wildlife.”
The GoodFish guide also includes a comprehensive list of restaurants around Australia which have committed to removing sustainable seafood from their menus, helping Aussies to ensure they are making the right choices when they eat out too.
