Less than 24 hours after Chris Hipkins misleadingly told New Zealanders that a Capital Gains Tax would be his only new tax, he has accidentally confirmed that he plans to bring in a Bed Tax, National’s Campaign Chair Simeon Brown says.
“Talking to media this morning, Chris Hipkins said ‘if local government want to introduce a bed levy to fund the tourism infrastructure they need, that’s a question for them’.
“It’s not a question for local government, the only way for a Bed Tax to be implemented is for the Government to legislate for it.
“A Bed Tax would increase the cost for a Kiwi family or couple planning a getaway for the weekend.
“We know that there are some councils who would like the Government to implement a Bed Tax, and Chris Hipkins has told them this morning that he will implement one for them.
“National will not introduce a Bed Tax, because there is no way to do so without increasing costs on Kiwis whether they are visiting family and friends, attending a funeral, or just taking a weekend away.
“Chris Hipkins is so addicted to tax that he cannot stop announcing them.
“If he cannot rule out a Bed Tax, then it is clear that Labour will introduce one – along with a suite of other new taxes to pay for Labour’s spending addiction.
“Labour cannot keep its story straight on tax. It has $18 billion in spending promises, meaning that it will have to implement several new taxes to fund its bill.
“Conveniently for Labour, its partners in the Greens, Te Pati Māori and The Opportunity Party are also proposing a raft of new taxes on hardworking New Zealanders.
“Kiwis have a clear choice on November 7. It’s either no new taxes with National, or nine new taxes and counting under a Labour-Greens-Te Pati Māori-Opportunity Party coalition.”
