City centre youth space coming soon

A landscaped gathering space for young people in the centre of Horsham has moved a step closer to reality.

The former weatherboard dwelling at The Station youth centre in Pynsent Street has been demolished, making way for the new public area as part of the second stage of the precinct’s redevelopment.

The house’s removal will open up the rear section of site where a half basketball and handball court was added in 2021.

New additions will include a barbecue and shelter, two lawn areas, concrete seating, bike hoops and trees.

The house that has been removed to make way for the new youth space.

Horsham Rural City Council Chief Executive Officer Sunil Bhalla said The Station, formerly known as Nexus, had a strong history of providing a safe and inclusive space for young people to connect with each other and access local services.

“From consulting with young people since the pandemic, we know that there is an increased need for youth spaces that foster social connection,” he said.

“Our youth services are important. They help tackle important issues such as mental health, alcohol and other drugs, financial wellbeing, education, employment and training.

“The Station is in an ideal spot in central Horsham and it will become a valuable community asset for years to come,” Mr Bhalla said.

Landscaping at the front of the site will begin in the coming weeks. When finished, it will match the stage one work already done at the rear of the property.

Upgrades inside the main building are also happening. Accessibility is being improved and the heating and cooling systems will be switched from gas to electric, making use of the recently fitted solar panels which will reduce overall energy consumption.

Council acknowledges funding contributions from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Fund ($115,000) and Regional Development Victoria’s Living Locals Program ($129,300). HRCC is contributing $130,700 to the project.
