City of Darwin is continuing to improve accessibility across the municipality, with a series of practical upgrades at Casuarina and Nightcliff libraries and along the Nightcliff Foreshore.
The improvements support City of Darwin’s commitment to creating welcoming and inclusive public spaces that are accessible to everyone.
Upgrades include:
- Installing a new accessible water bubbler at Casuarina Library.
- Installing tactile indicators at Casuarina and Nightcliff Libraries to improve accessibility.
- Improving the visibility of bookshelf signage at both libraries by increasing colour contrast, making collections easier to navigate.
- Installing tactile paving at three key pedestrian crossing points along the Nightcliff Foreshore including car park driveway crossings at the Nightcliff Jetty, Nightcliff Pool and Foreshore Café.
- Re-constructing old ramps at the Nightcliff Jetty car park driveway to make it more accessible and compliant to today’s standard.
Lord Mayor Peter Styles said the upgrades demonstrated City of Darwin’s commitment to making everyday community spaces safer and more accessible.
“Accessibility is about ensuring everyone can confidently access and enjoy our public spaces, facilities and services,” Mr Styles said.
“These practical improvements will make a real difference for people with disability, older residents, families with young children and anyone who benefits from more accessible infrastructure.
“Whether it’s making it easier to return library books, find your way around the library or safely cross busy pedestrian areas at the Nightcliff Foreshore, these upgrades help create a city that’s more accessible for everyone,” he said.
The tactile paving upgrades at Nightcliff Foreshore provide important wayfinding cues for people who are blind or have low vision, improving safety at pedestrian crossings in one of Darwin’s most popular recreational areas.
The upgrades support the priorities of City of Darwin’s Access Strategy 2025-2030, which aims to remove barriers and create a city where everyone can participate, belong and thrive.
They also align with City of Darwin’s Movement Strategy, which focuses on creating connected, safe and accessible places that are easy for people of all ages and abilities to move through.
