City of Greater Bendigo wins gold at Australian Tourism Awards

The City of Greater Bendigo’s Tourism and Major Events unit won gold for its Tudors to Windsors campaign at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Canberra on Friday night. The campaign won in the Destination Marketing category.

The winning campaign, which attracted 75,000 people, was the result of collaboration across the industry and with Bendigo Art Gallery.

The City and local tourism industry created and promoted more than 50 royal-themed experiences across the region with the aim of keeping visitors in Greater Bendigo for longer.

Highlights included the royal pop-up tram located on the piazza in Rosalind Park, the royal train which ran from Castlemaine to Bendigo, a giant Westminster Lego display at the Bendigo Visitor Centre, royal street art and royal accommodation packages.

City Tourism and Major Events Manager Terry Karamaloudis said this was the first time the City had won at a national level for marketing.

“We were the only Victorian Gold winner on the night as well, so this is very special,” Mr Karamaloudis said.

“Our tourism industry took advantage of the opportunity the exhibition presented and showed creativity and flexibility in working with us to market the various experiences on offer.

“We’re so proud to work in partnership with our industry to offer visitors a truly first-class experience, and it’s great to be recognised for that effort.”

In November, the City scooped multiple awards at the 2019 RACV Victorian Tourism Awards.
