The City of Hobart is urging bushwalkers to be fully prepared when visiting kunanyi/Mt Wellington, following a rescue mission last night that brought 18 stranded walkers, including three children, to safety.
Initially, a group of 13 walkers contacted Tasmania Police seeking assistance, which was referred onto City of Hobart.
While on their way up to the summit to rescue the first group, the City team found a further five walkers also requiring help.
Four City of Hobart staff spent five hours rescuing both groups, who were unprepared for the harsh weather conditions.
The operation involved multiple trips using three 4WD utes and a tractor.
The City advises checking road and weather conditions before any trip to the mountain.
It is often near-zero temperatures and strong winds at the summit, making it feel like minus 10 to 13 degrees Celsius. Last night felt like minus 21 degrees Celsius.
