City’s Grass Slashing Program Well Underway

The City of Greater Bendigo’s annual grass mowing and slashing program commenced in September and is well underway throughout Greater Bendigo.

City of Greater Bendigo Parks and Open Space Manager Tyrone Downie said through the annual program the City undertakes grass slashing across various road-sides throughout the municipality to reduce the potential risk and impact of fire in our rural landscapes.

“The City undertakes two road-side cuts during the high growth period and aims to have these works completed before the Christmas break. To date the City’s contractors have undertaken 87% of the first cut,” Mr Downie said.

“In addition, the City also delivers a broad range of cuts throughout the urban landscape to over 700 sites across the municipality. Locations include median strips, along waterways, cul de sacs, drainage lines, pathways and vacant land reserves managed by the City.

“Our contractors are working hard to cover all areas the City is responsible for maintaining as soon as possible and we are well and truly into our program,” Mr Downie said.

“It’s important for the community to know that the City is not the only authority responsible for grass cutting and slashing on road-sides and Crown Land areas. Other authorities also play a role in undertaking seasonal slashing works.

“Managing vegetation is always very challenging for the City, other responsible authorities, residents and landowner at this time of the year.”

Residents can check whether an area is included in the City’s slashing and mowing program by visiting the City’s Pozi website and entering the relevant address, then selecting the Parks and Open Space layer followed by the Slashing layer to view scheduled maintenance areas.
