Plans by the City of Greater Bendigo to bring pound and animal shelter services in-house when the current contract with RSPCA Victoria expires at the end of the June 2019 financial year are on track.
City of Greater Bendigo Safe and Healthy Environments Manager Caroline Grylls said it has been decided to call the new service BARC – Bendigo Animal Relief Centre.
“We are currently working on developing exciting new branding to market and promote the service which we will unveil in the near future,” said Ms Grylls.
“The City is working closely with the RSPCA to ensure a smooth transition of services on July 1.
“We are entering a lease for the existing RSPCA premises in Piper Road which is great news as it will provide continuity of service for residents.
“In terms of staffing we are advertising the Operations Manager position this week. When this position is appointed we will commence advertising for the Veterinary Nurse and Animal Attendant positions. This will allow the new Operations Manager to play an important role in the recruitment of the staff.
“We expect the number of available jobs will be similar to the current RSPCA numbers and the City has met with the existing staff at the centre to tell them about the City’s plans for the service and to encourage them to apply for the available roles.
“We will also meet with the existing volunteers who already play, and we hope will continue to play, such an important role at the centre.
“The City is also currently finalising tender documents to secure veterinary services and working to develop policies, service standards and procedures for the service.
“We will also develop a sponsorship program to encourage support and donations of food and other equipment for BARC and we welcome any enquiries about this from local businesses or individuals.
“While there is still plenty to do we are making good progress.”
