The Paperback Café at the Goulburn Mulwaree Library has been a beacon of hope for disadvantaged youth since its establishment in February 2019. Over the past five years, the café has successfully equipped participants with essential skills and provided invaluable experiences. Notable achievements include many groups of individuals completing their barista training at TAFE and the development of crucial life skills such as communication, teamwork, and customer service that has resulted in them finding full and part time employment in the hospitality industry.

However, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the impending closure of the café, effective June 30, 2024. Despite its positive impact, the café has been operating at a significant financial loss annually. Furthermore, a recent review by the State Library of NSW has highlighted the need for additional space to better serve our growing population.

In light of these considerations, some of the functions of the café will be integrated into Council’s Grant Funded Youth Services Connect, Support, and Empowerment program at the Community Centre in Auburn Street. This strategic move will ensure the continuation of support for our youth in innovative ways.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the dedicated team behind the café, including the Part-Time Youth Services Assistant and Youth Services Coordinator, for their unwavering dedication and hard work. Their passion has been instrumental in shaping the lives of many young individuals in our community.

As we navigate this transition, we remain committed to the growth and development of our library services and the empowerment of our youth.
