CLUELESS: Survey shows public knows almost nothing about gun laws, politicians know even less

Politics Reloaded

A SURVEY has revealed a worrying picture of how little our politicians understand the nations gun laws, which is doing more harm than good.

Politics Reloaded queried over 200 people to get their views on who understands our gun laws. Ninety-eight percent of those who responded say politicians have either a poor or no understanding of our gun laws.

Less than 2% said our politicians have an ‘okay’ understanding of them. No respondents thought our politicians have a good understanding.

The survey also reveals that 93% of people say only shooters understand our gun laws.

Politics Reloaded said the results are worrying, but not surprising. The group said poor understandings lead to bad policies which are deepening the divide.

“One of the key frustrations that everyone has with the debate of our gun laws is how polarising it can be,” a spokesman said.

“The reason for that is that the understanding of what our laws do, and should do, is not universal. Our politicians don’t understand them and aren’t motivated to change that”

“That’s not a healthy position to be in. We need our politicians to ask more questions before they come up with new policies, otherwise the problem will just get worse” he said.

He said the most logical way to improve our gun laws for our politicians to start canvassing the views of those who best understand them and respect the fact that the shooting industry participant are subject matter experts.

He said it also needs to be recognised that the shooting industry wants good public outcomes just as much as everyone else.
