The highest tides of the year will potentially combine with high seas later this week to create a potential flood risk for low lying coastal communities.
For the Kempsey Local Government Area, the greatest concern is the Crescent Head Holiday Park and low-lying areas around Killick Creek, Crescent Head and Korogoro Creek, Hat Head.
The full moon on Thursday is predicted to produce the highest predicted tide of the year at 2.10m.
This comes as water levels are being recorded that are higher than predicted along the majority of the north coast, with the level around 20cm higher at Crowdy Head just south of Port Macquarie.
Much of the NSW coast has also been exposed to swells over the weekend, with the highest waves measured at Crowdy Head Monday evening at just under 5m. Waves along the coast should moderate quickly over the next 2 days or so but remain directed from the south-east.
There is also the possibility of a small low pressure system developing off the coast of the Queensland border on Wednesday or Thursday.
Should the higher-than-predicted water levels coincide with the very high predicted tides, there will likely be substantial nuisance flooding around 8-9.30pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in areas that usually experience inundation on king tides.
