More shelter and bins, improved traffic management and opportunities to protect the natural environment are just some of the great elements that will be added to the design of the future Granite Hills Park, thanks to valuable community feedback.
Over 250 City of Whittlesea residents shared their ideas to help shape the design of Granite Hills Park, which will be located in the picturesque Quarry Hills Regional Parkland in South Morang.
The major community park will include play equipment for different ages and abilities, water play, giant slides, a 50-metre flying fox, barbecue and picnic facilities, and connected walking tracks.
City of Whittlesea Administrator Peita Duncan said that widespread community consultation has helped to ensure that Granite Hills Park will be a popular public space that reflects the diverse interests of residents in South Morang, Mernda and beyond.
“Granite Hills Park will be the gateway to the expansive Quarry Hills Regional Parkland, providing endless opportunities for residents to get active and explore this unique local treasure,” Ms Duncan said.
“This well-planned, accessible open space will acknowledge the Parkland’s rich cultural heritage and biodiversity in its design. The park will include elements to encourage nature play and utilise natural and recycled materials in keeping with the area’s incredible natural landscape.”
Construction of Granite Hills Park is expected to start in October 2022.
Quarry Hills Regional Parkland is also the proposed location for the City of Whittlesea’s future Aboriginal Gathering Place, which will be a welcoming, inclusive, and culturally safe space where Aboriginal people have a sense of belonging.
The Aboriginal Gathering Place will provide access to programs and services that strengthen culture and enhance wellbeing, for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
