Community parklets to increase vibrancy on Hampden Road

Two new temporary parklets in Nedlands – the first ever within the City of Perth – are set to increase vibrancy, support local business and foster community engagement as part of a new trial by the City.

The parklets, which will be installed on Hampden Road from 10 May, provide seating, a free community book nook and a designated area for dogs, encouraging locals to linger longer, grab a bite to eat and enjoy a little time out with their four-legged friend.

There will also be surprise and delight activations across May, including live acoustic music sets at lunchtime on Fridays.

Hampden Road is on the council boundary line of City of Perth and City of Nedland’s with the west side of the road overseen by City of Nedlands.

“This initiative is a great example of friendly collaboration to deliver positive outcomes for the community,” Chair Commissioner Eric Lumsden said.

“An overwhelming majority of local businesses have been enthusiastic about the parklets – including the Western Suburbs Business Association – and we hope this activation will encourage residents, workers and visitors to discover, or rediscover, the area.”

One parklet will be set up outside ice-cream parlour, Baskin-Robbins, with the second taking up residence outside Burgermeister.

Hampden Road shops, restaurants, cafes and dessert spots will be offering special discounts and deals during the trial, which will run for three months. Visitors will be asked to have their say on the activation via a survey for the chance to win a month’s worth of free coffee from a local vendor.

“If the trial is well received, we will look to extend it and potentially work with other community groups and businesses to install parklets in other areas across the city,” Commissioner Lumsden said.

Parklets have been used successfully around the world to enhance street amenity by offering interesting spaces, attracting people and creating community vibrancy.
