Community picnic set to go ahead to mark Cook Park’s 150th anniversary

Orange Council

A modified community picnic will be held on Saturday 25 November to mark the 150th anniversary of Cook Park.

The planned celebration had to be scaled back due to the number of grey-headed flying foxes currently in Cook Park.

Saturday’s event will begin at 10am and will be more low-key. Orange residents are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy the day.

GREEN LIGHT: The community picnic to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Cook Park will go ahead.

The modified version will include:

  • Welcome to Country
  • Mayoral speech
  • Performance by a strings duo – non amplified
  • Cake cutting
  • Commemorative tree planting
  • Picnic (BYO)

While a resolution was passed at Council’s 21 November meeting to cancel the event, a rescission motion to proceed with the event was received today.

This usually means the decision to cancel the event couldn’t be put into effect until the recission motion was considered at a Council meeting, however, because the rescission motion couldn’t be considered before Saturday’s celebration, Council will proceed with the event.

To ensure Council meets its obligations under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act, items on the agenda for the 150th celebrations that could cause distress to the grey-headed flying-fox camp have been removed from the running order.
