Commuters urged to stay safe on rail network

Commuters are being urged to stay safe on the rail network after many dangerous incidents were caught on camera.

New vision released for Rail Safety Week shows people risking their lives by running in front of moving trains, hurting themselves while rushing around stations and riding on the back of moving carriages.

Over the last 12 months, there have been 2689 incidents of trespassing and 1925 incidents of slips, trips and falls around stations.

To stay safe, commuters are being reminded to stay behind the yellow line, listen to station staff and follow the safety rules.

Minister for Transport Andrew Constance said these incidents could cause delays to services across the broader rail network.

“Some of these incidents such as people sliding down handrails and spraining their ankles, or falling over while looking at their phones are easily avoided with just a little more common sense,” Mr Constance said.

Sydney Trains Acting Chief Executive Suzanne Holden said it is easy to forget how dangerous trains and stations can be if you are distracted or in a hurry.

“Fortunately, the majority of customers do the right thing and I’d like to thank them for showing respect for their fellow passengers and our hard-working staff, particularly during this uncertain time,” Ms Holden said.
