Connecting cultures through food and stories

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Community Services and Development

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is creating a more harmonious, inclusive and respectful multicultural State, and one of the strongest ways to connect with people is through food.

Bringing people together by bringing a plate, the International Café has grown since 2018 thanks to Esther Campion and Shelly Sharma in the North and North West of Tasmania.

Communities know their own needs better than anyone, and this is a great example of developing strength in communities through connection, and celebrations, which play an important part in acknowledging the valuable contribution of those who have chosen to call this State home.

Our election commitments include establishing a Multicultural Hub in the North of the State, as a community space for events and gatherings for newly-arrived and established migrant communities, investing $250,000 towards the redevelopment of the Migrant Resource Centre’s Mowbray site, and $50,000 per year, for two years, to support its operation, as well as $20,000 to extend support service to migrants in the North-West of Tasmania.

Our State is stronger and more prosperous because of our multiculturalism, and we will continue to work with our service providers and peak to ensure Tasmanians can access supports and connection where they need it most.
