At its meeting on Tuesday 5 September, Council adopted the revised Flinders Foreshore Precinct Conservation Management Plan. The Plan was recently updated to reflect the heritage protection status of the pier and telegraph cable complex. The plan was revised by Biosis, expert consultants in ecology, heritage and environmental planning, with funding provided by Parks Victoria.
Flinders’ iconic pier caught the world’s attention in July 2021 when Sir David Attenborough lent his support to Mornington Peninsula community’s campaign to save Flinders pier. Attenborough supported the pier’s role in providing valuable habitat for the threatened weedy seadragon.
Together with our passionate community, Mornington Peninsula Shire advocated to protect the pier, and in March 2022 the Heritage Council of Victoria recommended the Flinders Pier and surrounding ‘Telegraph Cable Complex’ to be included in the Victorian Heritage Register because of their cultural heritage significance. Both assets were added to the Victorian Heritage Register in October 2022.
The Conservation Management Plan provides guidelines for future use and management of the pier and surrounding area to ensure any repairs and alterations are undertaken consistently with the heritage values of the precinct.
