Contamination in glass bins

A substantial amount of contamination was found during waste collection of glass bins (purple lid) yesterday.

Separating glass from other recycling products makes recycling more efficient, and allows more glass to be recovered for recycling.

Under the old system glass was mixed with other recyclables, and about 30 per cent of glass could not be recovered and broken glass fragments caused other materials to be unrecyclable.

This new system allows more glass and other products to be recycled, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfill.

What can go in the glass bin:

Glass jars (no lids), glass bottles (including broken bottles), wine bottles, beer bottles and glass olive oil bottles can all go in the purple bin.

What cannot go in the glass bin:

Glass cookware (including microwave plates), drinking glasses and vases cannot go in the purple bin. Other products such as food scraps (green bin), cardboard (yellow bin) or plastic (red bin) should not go in the purple bin.
