The ACT Government has announced that a contract has been signed with Lendlease Building to deliver the new Woden CIT campus, marking a significant milestone in the renewal of Woden Town Centre.
“The CIT Woden project and the new public transport interchange is a major catalyst for regeneration in Woden Town Centre,” said Minister for Skills, Chris Steel.
“It will create 520 local jobs and apprenticeships, support 6,500 students in a modern smart campus, deliver a new light rail ready public transport interchange and green spaces for everyone to enjoy.
“We are confident that Lendlease will be able to deliver the new campus and the next stage of the public transport interchange. The new delivery approach, combining design and construction of both parts of the precinct, will ensure they are well integrated and deliver on the community’s priorities for great public spaces.”
The partnership with Lendlease will deliver a 22,500 square metre CIT Woden Campus that includes:
- a 6-star Greenstar building achieved through the use of more sustainable building materials including timber super-structure, green concrete, all electric systems, electric vehicle chargers and internal gardens
- a youth foyer to provide housing for up to 20 at risk youth whilst they study or train
- a pedestrian boulevard linking the interchange to Woden Town Square
- a new Bowes and Bradley Street local shared zone
- a target of 10-15 percent of women working on the project and a target of 10 percent labour made up of trainees and apprentices, including CIT students
“Based on community feedback the project will also include a large all-weather canopy linking the campus and the interchange, more greenery and stronger connections through to the existing shops and services,” said Minister Steel.
While work is underway on the campus and interchange, a temporary bus interchange will be constructed on a section of the Matilda Street carpark to separate buses and passengers from the construction zone. This addresses community feedback about safety and access during the first phase of the interchange works over the past 12 months.
The updated delivery program means most of the new interchange will be operational in 2024, with the final stops coming online in 2025 with the new CIT campus.
“CIT Woden will usher in a new era for skills and training in Canberra and a new future for Woden as a great place to live, work and study,” said Minister Steel.
“There will be further opportunities for the community to have their say on the draft design of the project once it is developed by our delivery partner Lendlease.”
