Copenhagen style bike lane for Wellington St complete

The Wellington Street Copenhagen-style bike lanes in Collingwood are complete, providing a safer and better connected journey for cyclists.

These works were completed by Yarra City Council last month, and were delivered in partnership with VicRoads and TAC as part of Towards Zero: Victoria’s plan to ensure no one is seriously injured on our roads.

There are around 25,000 bike movements each weekday morning in the City of Yarra. Approximately 1000 people ride on Wellington Street during the weekday morning peak, making this an important investment for cyclists travelling in Yarra. Approximately one third of those riders are female, which is higher than the Victorian and national average.

The lanes will improve safety and travel time, by completely separating cyclists from Wellington Street traffic.

The protected bike lanes now run on both sides of Wellington Street, from Victoria Parade to Johnston Street. On the eastern side of Wellington Street, the bike lane is separated by a row of parking bays, raised concrete islands and garden beds. On the western side, the lane is separated by raised concrete islands.

The pedestrian crossing near Napoleon Street was also upgraded, additional bike parking installed, and traffic-calming measures implemented to make the road safer and more user-friendly for everybody, including distinct honeycomb road markings at potential conflict points to increase awareness. This is the first time this road marking treatment has been used in Victoria.

Since completing these works, we have seen a 20 percent increase in cycling during the morning peak.

This aligns with Council’s vision to create a connected, sustainable and safe city.
