Copper thieves caught red-handed at Salisbury, South Australia

Two men were arrested after allegedly stealing copper piping from an elderly resident’s home at Salisbury overnight.

The elderly victim noticed a couple of people moving about in the backyard of her Spains Road, Salisbury home, just before midnight on Tuesday 30 November, and called police.

Patrols quickly responded, allegedly locating one man in the front yard in the act of cutting copper piping.

Another man jumped a rear fence but was immediately apprehended by patrols.

It will be alleged the men had cut copper piping to the hot water service and the gas line, leaving the victim without hot water this morning.

The men, aged 44 and 57, both from Salisbury Downs, were arrested and charged with being unlawfully on premises, possess housebreaking implement, property damage and theft.

The older man was refused police bail and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court today, while the younger man was bailed to appear on 5 January.
