Coronavirus update 10 July

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Health

Overnight, Tasmania has recorded 1355 new cases with 201,712 people recovered and released from isolation since December 2021.

The total number of active cases currently stands at 9506 with 26 patients being in hospital specifically for COVID-19, four patients being treated in ICU and two on ventilators.

Sadly, I can confirm that a man in his 80s passed away in the State’s south.

I extend my sincere condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of this man who has sadly passed away.

Getting a booster when you are due continues to be the best defence against COVID-19, with vaccination available at 100+ pharmacies, 100+ GPs and state-run clinics.

Those eligible can also get their flu shot at the same time, so I strongly recommend booking in for both doses with your GP or pharmacy at the earliest opportunity.

From tomorrow, access to potentially lifesaving COVID-19 antiviral treatments will be expanded, with all Tasmanians aged over 70 who test positive to COVID-19 able to access antivirals on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). There will also be expanded access for people who are considered at high risk of developing severe illness from COVID, it is recommended you talk to your doctor about your treatment options.

While anti-viral treatments help stop COVID from becoming severe, but they are not a replacement for getting vaccinated or Covid safe behaviours.

We are a highly vaccinated state and nation, which continues to provide a level of protection against the current BA4 and BA5 strains, however, it is also important to take personal responsibility and continue to exercise COVID safe behaviours.

Stay up to date with vaccinations, practice good hand hygiene, follow social distancing and I’d encourage you to wear a mask when you can’t – particularly in indoor public spaces, test when you have symptoms and stay home when you are unwell.
