Delayed death reports due to data issues

Two new deaths were reported to the Department yesterday which occurred in the past 3 days.

Due to data feed issues this month, sadly, 105 additional deaths have also been added to the state and daily total. All of these deaths occurred since 1 July.

These total 107 deaths were of people aged in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 100s.

The data feed issue was caused by a delay in a third-party reporting deaths to the Department of Health.

It is important to note these deaths are not new. The families were notified at the time and the deaths were reported to authorities as required.

The number of daily deaths in Victoria over the past fortnight remains relatively stable, with an average of 19 deaths a day.

The Victorian Department of Health regularly undertakes reviews and audits of the State’s reported deaths to ensure the accuracy of our COVID-19 mortality figures.

The Victorian Department of Health is formally notified of deaths of people known to have COVID-19 via a number of different sources, including the Victorian Death Index, VICNISS, the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine, local public health units, and the Coroner. The department updates its confirmed death statistics daily.

The total number of COVID-related deaths in Victoria since the pandemic began is 4,577. The number of COVID-19 deaths recorded in Victoria so far this year is 2,966.
