Mornington Peninsula Shire is developing a Climate Emergency Plan to guide Council’s next steps following the climate emergency declaration on 13 August.
The Shire is now inviting community input, feedback and ideas via an online survey to help develop a Climate Emergency Plan for the Peninsula.
A Climate Emergency is a resolution for immediate and urgent action to reverse global warming. It is an unequivocal statement that it is the responsibility of every level of government, every community and business, and every person to:
- Reduce emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change
- Plan to adapt to the changes that cannot be avoided
Shire Mayor David Gill said the Climate Emergency declaration will be backed by action and real outcomes for the Peninsula community.
“This declaration is not just lip service, Council will develop a meaningful Climate Emergency Plan to guide the Climate Emergency response.
“Communities around the globe are taking action on this serious issue and we aren’t shying away from the responsibility we have as community leaders.
“We need all levels of government to act and, as the conduit between local community and government, we’re making sure the Peninsula’s message is heard all the way to the top.
“We’re calling on the community to provide input, feedback and ideas that will help develop the Plan, which will include a range of climate change actions to guide all Shire operations as well as advocating to state and federal government and supporting community action.
“I encourage everyone in our community to learn more about what’s happening to our planet and contribute to the plan via our survey”, concluded Cr Gill.
A draft plan will be prepared for Council review by February 2020 and is expected to be made available for public exhibition in May 2020.
The Climate Emergency Plan will focus on seven key areas including:
- Energy Transition
- Zero Emissions Transport
- Circular Economy and Zero Waste
- Sustainable Farming
- Natural Environment and Sequestration
- Resilient Mornington Peninsula
- Climate Emergency Mobilisation and Leadership

The survey is open until 5pm Sunday 3 November 2019.
Keep an eye out for the Shire’s Climate Emergency pop ups at your local market or shopping centre where you will be able to complete the survey and share your climate message.
