Council commits funds to Pedrina Park development

The Pedrina Park Inclusive Sports Hub Pavilion is one step closer to reality with Southern Grampians Shire Council awarding the tender for its construction at Wednesday night’s December meeting. Council also allocated funding towards the Pedrina Park Netball Court Renewal and the Soccer Pitch Irrigation.

The successful tenderer for the Inclusive Sports Hub Pavilion was Rendine Constructions Pty Ltd for the GST inclusive price of $1,355,339.00. Council received funding of $500,000 towards the project from Sports and Recreation Victoria’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund and in September 2020, Council resolved to reallocate $825,206 from the 2020/21 budget to form a total budget of $1,325,206 (GST exclusive) to enable this project to be delivered.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Cr Bruach Colliton said Council were very pleased to finally award the tender for the Pavilion and commit funds to what is one of the Shire’s most important facilities.

“The Inclusive Sports Hub Pavilion at Pedrina Park was identified as a priority in Council’s Recreation and Leisure Strategic Plan 2019-2029 and Pedrina Park Master Plan. It will result in the development of a multi-use sporting and community facility, serving all user groups and the wider community.

“This project has been a long time in the planning stages and it’s terrific to see it finally coming to fruition,” Cr Colliton said.

The need for a renewal of the netball courts was also identified in the Pedrina Park Master Plan. The $1.6 million project involves the demolition of existing unsafe netball courts and associated infrastructure and for the renewal of six netball courts complying with Netball Australia standards. The works includes court lighting, fencing and associated infrastructure to facilitate day time and night time utilisation.

Funding for the netball court renewal project has been allocated from the second round of the Federal Governments Local Roads and Community Infrastructure fund. In the 2020/21 Federal Budget an announcement of an additional $1B Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCIP) to support Councils in stimulating the economy was made. The allocation from this program for Southern Grampians Shire Council is $1,746,721 and any projects need to be complete by 31 December 2021.

It was also proposed to Council that the Soccer pitch irrigation project at Pedrina Park be completed with the remaining funding from the Federal Government and a co-contribution from Council. Council resolved to complete the Soccer pitch irrigation project with this funding if it is considered eligible under the terms and conditions of the Federal Government funding.

“Next steps following the awarding of the tender for the new Pavilion will be for Council staff to work with the successful tenderer to engage with all key stakeholders to finalise location and floorplan design with consideration of the site constraints such as services, existing fields of play and infrastructure. The resulting final design from this process will come back to Council prior to commencement of the build and we very much look forward to seeing the outcome of this design and consultation phase,” Cr Colliton said.
