Townsville City Council crews are installing additional rock protection to an existing stormwater drain which runs between Horseshoe Bay Park and Apjohn Street on Magnetic Island as part of a wider project to enhance drainage in the area.
Deputy Mayor and Infrastructure Services Committee chair Mark Molachino said it was important to complete the project before the wet season commenced.
“These early works are the first stage of a project to enhance drainage in the area,” Cr Molachino said.
“Specifically, the work that will be undertaken over the next two weeks will help protect residents by slowing the flow of water through the existing drain that runs between Horseshoe Bay Park and Apjohn Street intersection.
“The construction of stage 2 is scheduled to commence in the New Year following the relocation of existing electricity infrastructure in the area.
“Once complete, the enhanced drainage infrastructure will provide greater protection to residents from high rainfall events that Magnetic Island receives.”
These works are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
Local councillor Ann-Maree Greaney thanked the Magnetic Island community for their patience while the works are undertaken.
“This is an important project and one which will greatly benefit nearby residents,” Cr Greaney said.
“Council will use a 900-tonne barge to transport heavy equipment and material to Horseshoe Bay and this will result in additional traffic on Pacific Drive. Council apologies for any inconvenience and thanks the community for their patience and understanding.”
