Council offers free rubbish bin upsize for 12 months

Recycling 2.0

Council is offering eligible Hobsons Bay households an upsize of their rubbish bin to a larger 240 litre bin, at no charge (until 1 July 2021) during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The offer comes in light of some larger households generating higher than normal volumes of rubbish while being at home as a result of Coronavirus pandemic government restrictions.

The free upsize is available for larger households (with four or more permanent residents), and those with medical or care needs that create additional volumes of waste, such as two or more children in nappies. Roughly 20 per cent of households across the municipality will be eligible. Eligible households that already have a larger rubbish bin can also apply to access the free period.

To apply, residents can complete a simple online form. Documentation is not required in the application, but residents must be able to provide evidence upon request of their household circumstances. Residents can also log-in and track their application progress.

Once the application is approved, Council will arrange delivery of the new bin and retrieval of the old bin, which will either be reused or recycled. Bin deliveries will be prioritised to larger households (five or more residents) and those with special medical or care needs. Delivery speed will depend on application volumes, but could take up to two months if all eligible residents apply.

In the meantime while residents are waiting for their large rubbish bin, Council will continue to offer a free weekly rubbish drop off service every Saturday at Council’s Altona Operations Centre for those who need it.

Residents will be contacted prior to the expiration of the free period about whether they would like to continue to use the 240 litre rubbish bin or revert to the 120 litre. After 30 June 2021, Council’s standard waste charges will apply.
