Cessnock City Council is proud to support Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) NSW, which takes place from 2 to 8 May 2022.

PAW aims to improve understanding and awareness of NSW privacy legislation, and to raise awareness of a person’s privacy rights and agency obligations. The 2022 theme for PAW is Privacy: The foundation of trust – we all have a role to play.

Each individual has a right to privacy, and has the right to access and amend their personal and health information held by NSW government agencies.

There are a number of simple actions people can take to protect their privacy, including ensuring important documents are stored in a safe place, using different passwords for different accounts, checking bank statements for unusual activity, and ensuring personal information is correct and up to date.

The Information and Privacy Commission NSW (IPC) administers privacy legislation in NSW, which includes the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (PPIP Act), and the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002 (HRIP Act).

Cessnock City Council’s Acting General Manager Robert Maginnity said Council is committed to protecting the privacy of those in our community, and all NSW citizens.

“Council has a Privacy Management Plan which ensures we’re educating our staff about their obligations when it comes to handling personal information,” Robert said.

“Council also has a Privacy Statement that informs both the community and Council staff about how personal information will be used, stored and accessed after it’s collected,”
